Welcome to understanding your new dog

Calming music for puppies

Things are probably not going as easily as imagined with that sweet little bundle of fur you just brought home. You might be dealing with a puppy that won’t sleep, barks for no reason, won’t settle in her crate, and is biting every hand or inanimate household object in existence. The real reason you’re here though, is because you have no idea what’s causing this behavior or how to fix it and get your life back.

All of this bad behavior seems unsolvable and relegated to the “puppy phase” only because we’ve been missing a critical component of the conversation…

How does interpret sound

How dogs interpret human sounds

Dogs can hear twice as many frequencies and us, and over 4x as well. Smell and sound are their primary modes of navigation. And since those senses are SO much more powerful than ours, we mostly have no idea what’s going on for them. The fine-tuned senses of a dog are honed for a canine environment, what happens when we bring them into a human one? Well, for many, and probably including yours, it freaks them out!

This is not your fault

Auditory environment is (mostly) not part of the discussion for a new puppy’s needs on their first week home, and not something we modern, overly stimulated humans take notice of. But I can promise your little puppy sure is noticing all the new sounds. Imagine, this brand-new puppy has suddenly left everything it thought the world was, and landed in a new environment that comes with jostling pans in the kitchen, alarms in the morning, doorbells at random times. Smells just don’t surprise quite like sudden, unexplained sounds can. And it’s why sound is one of the most common household stressors for canines.

Puppies are like newborn babies

Think of your puppy like a newborn baby

The new puppy experience would be akin to placing a newborn human baby in a room with only flashing neon lights and then getting frustrated when the baby tried to communicate his fear by screaming and crying. Puppies are literally babies. With no way to communicate their needs other than “bad” behavior. Our disconnect only happens because we don’t understand what they’re trying to say. And of course by the time your puppy tries to “say” it, they’re frustrated and agitated too.

That’s why auditory or sonic environment is SO important for dogs, especially at the incredibly impressionable age of puppyhood (6 weeks-18 months).

Early sensory environments impact their personality, perception, and tolerances for years to come. It’s why we believe using music to create a peaceful sonic environment where your pup or young dog easily acclimates to everyday sounds is the best way you can grow a calm, loving canine.

The music of Calm Your Puppy follows our psychoacoustic formula for calming, but with added household sound effects that introduce disruptions as part of a normal, calm home environment. This kind of early auditory training helps prevent, and re-patterns existing noise phobias in puppies.

Music to calm your dog

The effect?
Your puppy comes to deeply associate home, with calm.

Music to calm your dog

“After starting this music, my young pups started sleeping through the night.”

Lori Yaden, Chillicothe, OH.

“When we brought the puppies home on the day they were born, we started with the iCalm puppy music. We used it every day and night. When we turned the music on at night, they would cuddle up and sleep. We continued until they went to their forever homes. The puppies were not bothered by any strange noises, fireworks, thunder, children playing, etc. We still hear from some of the puppies’ people, telling us how well they are doing.”

Lynda Adams, Cape Coral, FL.

“We started using your music when we brought Lucy home at 12 weeks and have used it to soothe her at bedtime, when she is left at home, or when there’s a stressful situation. Thank you for giving us this wonderful aid to raising a calm, happy dog.”

Molly Hart, Ijamsville, MD.

“I have been a customer enjoying your music for about 8 years along with my dogs and my customers. Your Bluetooth speaker has been exceptional for ease of use and quality. Last night, my 1-yr old pup was unable to settle due to his mum and auntie being in season. I took all the boys into our calm room and played your music; within 5-min they had all settled and fast asleep.”

Bex Turner, Marshall, MO.

Here’s the science behind iCalmPet music

Simple Sound

Simple Sound

The over-arching psychoacoustic theory informing iCalmPet music is summed up in just two words — simple sound. This term refers to the process of minimizing intricate auditory information. iCalmPet music is intentionally selected, arranged, and recorded to provide easeful auditory assimilation.

Entertain your puppy

Entrainment

Entrainment s the process where our internal pulses will match an external periodic rhythm. This is easily observed in humans tapping their toes and moving their heads to a rhythm. But entrainment goes deeper for dogs, too! Primary body pulses (heart rate, brain waves, and breath) can be slowed and relaxed when influenced by specially-designed music.

Puppy Sound Research

Proven Research

From a study comparing Through a Dog’s Ear music to unaltered classical music by S. Wagner, 2004: Results showed 70% of anxiety behaviors were reduced with psychoacoustically designed music. Solo instruments, slower tempos, and less complex arrangements had a greater calming effect than faster, more complex content.
