Joshua Leeds and Lisa Spector – the team that brought forward the clinically tested Through a Dog’s Ear music series – continue their ground-breaking bioacoustic work, now with cats! Through a Cat’s Ear combines music and sound therapy techniques, specifically designed for feline anxiety issues and enrichment. These music programs for cats promote a healthy home environment for pets.
Why Music Programs for Cats?
Since the 2008 release of Through a Dog’s Ear music, requests for music specially designed for cats have been constant. As a research-based organization, we were intrigued; there has been little scientific examination of music and sound with cats. However, recent research by Dr. C.A. Tony Buffington (2011, Ohio State University) caught my attention. While studying feline interstitial cystitis (a leading cause of euthanasia), researchers discovered a primary cause of this ailment: stress! Change in the cat’s physical environment—strangers, different food, additional animals, loud noises, illness, etc.—is a major contributor. Cats prefer their homes to be stable and consistent.
Acute feline stress turns into chronic irritation, manifesting in disease and behavioral challenges.
Music for Calming, Vol. 1
In Music for Calming, Vol. 1, our goal was to create calm – often in non-consistent environments. This just means that the music should help in a regular household, one where people come and go throughout the day and different sensory stimulations are bound to effect pets, in ways that might not be obvious, Bring in calming music programs for cats.
We are “calming” experts, with both people and dogs. We use natural and clinically proven sonic techniques to slow primary body pulses.
Through a Cat’s Ear, Volume 1 is designed to reduce stress in a chaotic or unsettling environment. Our sonic toolkit originates from sound therapies with neurodevelopmentally-challenged humans in which tone, tempo, and pattern are considered. Frequency ranges have been adjusted to a cat’s auditory range and a new technique called sonic anchoring is used.
Music to Stimulate, Vol. 2
In Music to Stimulate, Vol. 2, our goal is to arouse cognitive and physical function. Using the principles of resonance, entrainment, and pattern identification, we go in the opposite direction from Calming. In this soundtrack, we employ high frequency instrumentation, complex melodic patterns, increasing tempi, and frequency modulation. This CD is meant to stimulate Kitty by exciting her and inspiring her to play!
Through a Cat’s Ear, Volume 2 is to provide sensory enrichment for indoor cats. Why is environmental enrichment important? Without high sensorial activities, your indoor cat’s nervous system becomes chronically stressed. This leads to difficult behaviors and/or illnesses that impact the entire cat household.
Noise Phobias, Vol. 3
In Noise Phobias, Vol. 3, our goal is to ease noise phobias. We strive to build a conditioned response of positive association for kittens and cats of all ages.
Through a Cat’s Ear, Volume 3 for Noise Phobias is a sonic inoculation for your kitty. Repeated playing will gently introduce her to common noises. Intermixed with bioacoustically designed piano arrangements, these soundtracks will accustom and acclimate your cat to common household and outdoor sounds. It’s great for all cats exhibiting noise anxieties, but especially great for the kitty that has the luxury to be outside or inside.
